Why People Delay Their Relocation Decision

Many people who want to relocate aren't waiting because they lack interest—they're waiting because they haven't resolved one or two important questions.

ideal-LIVING research shows that uncertainty about where to move and concerns about family are among the biggest reasons people delay a relocation decision.

What Causes People to Put Off Moving?

According to ideal-LIVING relocation research:

  • 44% say they are unsure where they want to move.
  • 38% cite family considerations as a reason for delaying their move.
  • About 35%–36% expect to move within one to two years.
  • Roughly 37% say their move is still more than two years away.

The findings suggest that relocation is often a process rather than a single decision.

Choosing the Right Location Takes Time

With dozens of attractive destinations to consider, narrowing the possibilities can be difficult. Climate, taxes, cost of living, healthcare, housing, amenities and lifestyle can all influence the decision.

For many prospective movers, the first challenge isn't finding a home. It's deciding where they want their next chapter to take place.

Family Can Influence the Timeline

Moving may also mean changing the distance between children, grandchildren, parents and longtime friends. Even when someone is financially and personally ready for a change, family considerations can affect where they move—and when.

That helps explain why relocation plans can remain active for several years before a final decision is made.

What Helps People Move From Considering to Deciding?

Research can reduce uncertainty, but firsthand experience matters too.

ideal-LIVING research found that 51% of respondents value in-person tours when evaluating their options, reinforcing the importance of visiting destinations and communities before making a final decision.

A practical approach is to consider, compare and visit:

Consider the lifestyle and priorities that matter most.
Compare destinations based on factors such as taxes, climate, cost of living, healthcare and amenities.
Visit the strongest possibilities to experience the area firsthand.

The goal isn't to make the decision quickly. It's to gather enough information to make the decision with confidence.
