Should You Move Closer to Friends in Retirement?

Written by Gina Howard | Sep 23, 2026, 1:47:25 AM

Retirement can change not only how you spend your time, but who you spend it with. Without a daily work schedule, friendships and social connections can become an even bigger part of everyday life.

That raises a question more people may want to consider when planning a move:

Should you move closer to friends in retirement?

There isn't one answer for everyone, but relationships deserve a place alongside housing costs, climate, healthcare, taxes, and lifestyle when deciding where to live.

Why Can Living Near Friends Matter in Retirement?

Living closer to friends can make everyday connection easier. Dinner doesn't require months of planning. Golf, pickleball, walking, travel, or simply meeting for coffee can become part of your normal routine.

Research on social connection also gives this consideration added importance. The National Institute on Aging notes that staying socially connected and participating in meaningful activities can support well-being as people age.

Should Friends Determine Where You Retire?

Probably not by themselves.

A location still needs to work for your finances, housing preferences, healthcare needs, climate, activities, and long-term plans.

Instead, consider adding one more question to your relocation checklist:

Who do I want to have nearby in my next chapter?

You don't necessarily need to live next door—or even in the same community. Being within an easy drive of close friends may provide the connection you want while allowing everyone to choose the home and community that best fits their individual lifestyle.

What If You and Your Friends Are Considering a Move?

Start the conversation early.

Compare the places you're considering. Talk about the lifestyles you each want. Share communities you discover. You may find that you have more relocation priorities in common than you expected.

You can also explore destinations together before anyone makes a commitment. Visiting communities, attending a Best Places Expo, or planning a Discovery Travel visit can turn relocation research into something you experience together.

Could Your Next Chapter Include Your Friends?

Moving closer to friends isn't right for everyone, and friends don't have to follow identical retirement plans.

But if relationships are important to the life you want after you move, they deserve to be part of the decision.
